Organic Design: A Dream Like a Dream and Ago with Stan Lai and Sandra Woodall
Playwright/director Stan Lai (cocurator of this lecture series) and visual artist/designer Sandra Woodall will engage in a lively conversation about the idea of organic design and how it plays out in Lai’s A Dream Like a Dream and in Ago, an upcoming play being created at Berkeley.
Sandra Woodall has contributed scenic and costume designs to American Conservatory Theatre, Eureka Theatre, Magic Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, and many other companies around the world. Her recent productions include the visual design of Winter Journey in Beijing, written by Wan Fang and directed by Stan Lai. She is currently designing costumes for a 2019 world-premiere ballet by Liam Scarlett at San Francisco Ballet.
Born in the United States and based in Taiwan, Stan Lai is an acclaimed playwright and director known for creating some of the most memorable works of the contemporary Chinese stage, and for his invention of bold new genres and innovative staging. His works include more than thirty original plays, among them the epic A Dream Like a Dream and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land; two feature films; and four operas.
