Gallery + Studio: Experiments in Three Dimensions

For ages 6 to 12 with accompanying adult(s)

  • With artist
Jennie Smith earned her MFA from UC Berkeley. When she is not drawing in her own studio, she can be found at the de Young Museum making art with kids from all over the Bay Area.

Modern artists like Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, and others investigated color, shape, rhythm, and balance in their works on view in Dimensionism. In this workshop led by artist Jennie Smith, work on your own or with one another to create sculptural artworks using paper, cardboard, wonder foam, and wire. Then, talk about your own experiments and process in a group discussion, posing open-ended questions just as these artists did.

About Gallery + Studio
On the second Saturday of each month, Gallery + Studio connects art viewing with art making in ways that engage both young people and their grown-ups. Each two-part workshop integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project, and lasts about an hour and a half. Sign up on site beginning fifteen minutes before the session you wish to attend. Space is limited to twelve kids per session; please arrive promptly to sign up.
