Artist’s Talk: Joanne Leonard

In this illustrated talk, Joanne Leonard will discuss her photographic work, especially as it relates to the places and spaces of women’s lives, providing context for the photographs on view in her exhibition.

It has been more than fifty years since Leonard moved to Oakland, where she photographed the graduations and weddings of neighbors who became friends, as well as the street life around her. Her neighborhood—semi-industrial but dotted with homes—became her photographic project. The title of her exhibition, Intimate Documentary, suggests both her documentary impulse and her interest in personal storytelling about events of daily life.
