Matti Braun on Vikram Sarabhai

Copresented by the Society for Arts and Cultural Heritage of India

Artist Matti Braun spins a web of interdisciplinary associations around famed Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971). Best remembered as the father of India’s space program, Sarabhai was a leading figure in twentieth-century Indian culture as well as science. With its precisely composed score of images and words, Braun’s presentation traces Sarabhai’s connections with major cultural figures from poet Rabindranath Tagore to filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Braun is a Cologne-based multidisciplinary artist who works in painting, photography, and installation and who exhibits internationally. On view at the Rubin Museum in New York since 2003, his signature installation, R.T./S.R./V.S., was inspired by Satyajit Ray’s unrealized film The Alien, the filmscript for which Sarabhai in turn helped inspire.
