Young readers are invited to read aloud to each other from the opening of Jerry Craft’s book New Kid. We will read from on-screen text for about forty-five minutes. A few days later, children who participated in the session will get a copy of the book in the mail to continue reading at home. Sign up for this event on Wednesday, September 9, or Thursday, September 10, when the sign-up link will be active on this page. The meeting link will be sent to you on the morning of Saturday, September 12.

Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from home to the upscale Riverdale Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds.
