Jennifer Deaver is a school librarian for the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

At Virtual Roundtable Reading, young readers are invited to read aloud to each other from the opening pages of a good book. We will read from on-screen text for about forty-five minutes. A few days later, children who participated in the session will get a copy of the book in the mail to continue reading at home. Sign up for this event on Wednesday, June 9 or Thursday, June 10, when the sign-up link will be active on this page. The meeting link will be sent to you on the morning of Saturday, June 12.

In this sequel to the Newbery Award–winning The One and Only Ivan, tough-talking Chihuahua mutt Bob, a rescued stray, self-consciously admits that his new life as a pampered pet suits him. He regularly visits his best friends Ivan (a gorilla) and Ruby (an elephant) in the wildlife sanctuary where they now live and they, in turn, help Bob search for his long-lost sister. But time is running out as a hurricane approaches the sanctuary, and Bob finds courage he never knew he had as he helps his friends survive the storm and its aftermath.
