Virtual Roundtable Reading: The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

Recommended for ages 8 and up

  • Reading led by

Carl Coleman is a school librarian for the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

At Virtual Roundtable Reading young readers are invited to read aloud to each other from the opening pages of a good book. We will read from on-screen text for about forty-five minutes. A few days later, children who participated in the session will get a copy of the book in the mail to continue reading at home. Sign up for this event on Wednesday, July 7, or Thursday, July 8, when the sign-up link will be active on this page. The meeting link will be sent to you on the morning of Saturday, July 10.

From the moment Despereaux the mouse is born, it’s clear that he’s different. As he grows, he discovers a love for music, falls in love with a human princess, and questions the world around him. Embarking on a momentous journey, he encounters a rat called Roscuro and a girl named Miggery Sow and, because of them, realizes he must find the bravery in himself to right a grievous wrong. Read The Tale of Despereaux with librarian Carl Coleman and other kids to find out how he does it!
