He believes art is a healing force in children’s lives and encourages his students to find their own voice and identity through art making. Teaching art to children is Fortune’s inspiration for creating and exhibiting his own work.

Many visual elements interact to create rhythm in quilts by Rosie Lee Tompkins. Meet us on Zoom to see some of Tompkins’s exciting designs, then experiment with shapes, colors, and patterns to make your own individual art quilt with artist Kaya Fortune. Explore symmetry, asymmetry, and balance as you improvise your design.

Materials

Please gather these materials before the session:

  • Construction paper in multiple colors, or other colored paper
  • Other collage materials such as wrapping paper, paper bags, or patterned paper
  • Scissors
  • Gluestick
  • Pencil
  • Oil pastels or crayons

Also useful:

  • A few sheets of white or black paper to use as background (8” x 10” or 9” x 12” or similar size)
